Sound slower in Mars

Sound travels slower in Mars.

On Earth, on the average, sound travels at 767 miles per hour.

However, on Mars, low-pitched sound travels at approximately 537 miles per hour and high-pitched sound at about 559 miles per hour.

This may be due to the thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

The atmosphere on Earth is thicker and consists of mainly Nitrogen and Oxygen.

Scientists also found that sounds also carry a shorter distance in Mars. On Earth, they drop off at about 213 feet while sounds start to falter after 13 feet in Mars.

The study was done using NASA’s Perseverance Rover and Ingenuity helicopter.
