Nigeria’s food and medicine regulator, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has stopped the sale and use of miracle water and soap from Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry, a faith-based organisation.
This follows petitions to NAFDAC that the church founder, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, is advertising the Miracle Water and Miracle Soap in social media as having healing and miracle capability, including cure for barrenness. The prophet claims that barren women would have twins if they use the products which are falsely claimed to be registered by NAFDAC.
The petitioners submitted samples of the products to NAFDAC to verify the claims. Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC Director-general, named the products: Miracle & Healing Water, River Jordan Water, The Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida, A new beginning Mount Camel Miracle Water, Water of life, Miracle Water from The Pool of Bethsaida (1L), A New Beginning Pool of Bethsaida Water and Father Smelled Perfume.
A Nigerian activist who uses the name VeryDarkMan drew public attention to the prophet’s activities when he bought the holy water and tested it, on camera, with disabled persons in the Disability Community, Abuja
This attracted a N1 billion lawsuit from the prophet for defamation of his character. This was in early August, 2024.
On August 14, 2024, NAFDAC officials visited the Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry at KM 5 Effurun-Sapele Road, Delta State, and bought 25 cl bottle of the Miracle Water for N3,000 with receipt.
The average price of that size of bottle water is N100.
NAFDAC officials again visited the Deliverance Ministry on August 27, 2024, to inspect the manufacturing process, but were denied access.
A letter of invitation was issued to the church officials to report on August 28, but it was not honoured. The church, instead, submitted a legal document at NAFDAC Headquarters, Abuja, on August 28, 2024, asking them to come back on September 3, 2024, for the inspection.
NAFDAC then gave the prophet till the 29th of August, 2024, to report to their office in Asaba, Delta State, to assist in further investigation.
NAFDAC, after investigations, has also sealed Globod Table Water company for complicity in this act for which NAFDAC was not informed and did not approve.
NAFDAC says the manufacture of a regulated product without meeting requisite regulatory requirements and without authorization is an offence.
