WHO bans four Indian-made cough syrups after 66 deaths in Gambia

The World Health Organisation has raised a health alert and barred people from using four Indian-made cough medications after the death of 66 children in Gambia, West Africa.

The drugs are: Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

They are made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals, Haryana, India.

The Director-General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says they are conducting further investigations with the company and regulatory authorities in India.

Initial tests reveal that the products contain Diethylene glycol and Ethylene glycol which can cause toxic effects and kidney failure.

They were exported to Gambia on 29 September, 2022 and have not been sent to any other country yet.
