Nigeria has inaugurated a National Council on Climate Change.
The council is to formulate appropriate policies for achieving lower Green House gas emission in the country.
It will also seek ways to promote sustainable growth of the economy.
The Council is chaired by the President of Nigeria, with the Vice President as Vice Chairman.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum is also a member.
Other members are the ministers of Environment, Petroleum Resources, Budget and National Planning, Justice, Mines and Steel Development, Finance, Agriculture, Power, Women Affairs, Transportation, and Water Resources.
The Council also has the Governor of Central Bank, National Security Adviser, President of Association Local Governments of Nigeria; a representative of the private sector on climate change, National Council on Women Societies, Nigerian Youth Congress, and Civil Society Organisation as members.
Nigeria is a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In November 2021, after COP 26 in Glasgow, Nigeria promulgated a Climate Change Act giving legal backing to the National Council on Climate Change.
On 25th July, 2022 Nigeria appointed a Director-General and a Secretary for the National Council on Climate Change to run its secretariat.
The Net Zero-Target for Nigeria is by 2060.
The National Council on Climate Change was inaugurated by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari on 28 September, 2022.
