Italian astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti, makes history as the first European woman to ever command the ISS.
On 28 September, 2022 cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev handed over the symbolic key and command of the orbital station to her.
Samantha Cristoforetti first traveled to space in 2014 and holds the record for the single longest stay in space by a European woman. She spent 199 days in the ISS in that mission.
She traveled again to space on 27 April, 2022 where she will stay for six months.
Five ESA astronauts have commanded the ISS before but, they are all men.
Cristoforetti is popular for her short tiktok videos she makes and posts from the ISS in the social media.
