Derek Skipper, 92, sits and passes Maths in GCSE

Derek Skipper, 92 years old, from Orwell in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, sat for the General Certificate of Secondary Education, GCSE, examination in Mathematics and passed.

He scored Grade 5, the highest grade available on the foundation paper he took.

He started studying via Zoom in September, 2021 with the Cam Academy Trust, which runs Comberton Village College where he sat his examination in June, 2022.

Mr Skipper is the oldest person to sit a GCSE in UK.

He used a magnifying glass to assist with reading the questions because the print was too small for his eyes.

But, he said sitting the actual examination was not stressful.

“Maths is a wonderful thing and it is very easy to say you are no good at it… any opportunity to learn and embrace it, great,” he said.

On the result, he said: “I am very pleased indeed.”
