Russia’s state-owned corporation, Rosatom, is building Egypt’s first nuclear power plant of 4,800 MW for electricity generation.
The nuclear power plant, which will have four reactors of 1,200 MW each, is in El Dabaa, by the Mediterranean, 300 kilometres northwest of Cairo.
Work started with the laying of the concrete foundation for the first reactor in the plant on 20 July, 2022.
Egypt’s Electricity Minister, Mohamed Shaker, and Head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, witnessed the event.
The agreement for the Dabaa nuclear power plant was signed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and President Vladimir Putin way back in 2017.
The estimated cost is $25 billion.
Rosatom will build and supply the nuclear fuel to run the pressurized water nuclear power plant.
Work on the first of the four reactors has been approved by the nuclear regulatory agency in Egypt, Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority.
Rosatom says the plant will be ready in 2029.
