Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, NEISA, 2025, holds

The Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, NEISA, 2025, has been held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The summit, held to stimulate the adoption of peaceful nuclear energy in Africa, took place from June 30 to July 1, 2025.

International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, Director General, Rafael Grossi, made a case for the greater use of nuclear energy in Africa for rapid economic development, especially with low carbon dioxide emissions and cleaner environment.

He said he is happy that Egypt is currently building nuclear reactors, and South Africa is expanding its use of nuclear technology in electricity generation.

Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Niger, Sudan, Togo and Uganda have hosted IAEA review missions for nuclear technology, while Rwanda and Zambia are preparing to host them, he said.

Grossi said he has met Rwanda’s President Paul Kigame and Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente as well as Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Zeine of Niger on plans to support energy, health and agriculture using nuclear technology.

The World Bank and IAEA, on June 26, 2025, signed a partnership agreement to fund nuclear energy projects in developing countries where finance may be a challenge.

Rafael Grossi signed for IAEA while World Bank’s Group President, Ajay Banga, signed for his organisation.

Rafael Grossi visited Nigeria on May 16, 2024, and held talks with Vice President Kashim Shettima on the country’s nuclear electricity programme and cancer treatment using nuclear technology.

Grossi said “IAEA is proud to partner with Africa and contribute to its development.”
