Nigeria reiterates position on comprehensive nuclear test ban

Nigeria reiterated its position in support of a comprehensive nuclear test ban on 7 July, 2025, when Vice President Kashim Shettima received the Executive Secretary of Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Organisation, CTBTO, Dr Robert Floyd, in Abuja.

Vice President Shettima said much of sub-Saharan Africa is facing challenges of poverty eradication and pursuing economic development, and are not interested in acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

He commended the CTBTO’s use of its 337 stations for not only detecting nuclear tests but also identifying seismic activities like tsunami worldwide.

Nigeria signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, NPT, in 1968.

The country is currently pursuing a nuclear electricity programme.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General, Rafael Grossi, visited Vice President Kashim Shettima on May 16, 2024, to further discuss how best to help in using nuclear energy in healthcare and power generation.

The Acting Chairman of Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, NAEC, Anthony Ekedegwa, and the Director General of the other nuclear agency, Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, NNRA, Yau Idris, joined Vice President Kashim Shettima in receiving the Executive Secretary of CTBTO.
