US President Donald Trump in an address to the Joint Session of Congress on 4 March, 2025, made several claims of saving billions of dollars of government money through the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE.
In one example, he said his government saved “$8 million for making mice transgender. That is real.”
He was actually referring to the $8 million in research grants to the University of Cincinnati for work on transgenic, not transgender, mice.
Transgenic mice are genetically modified mice used to study effects of cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease in rodents before trying them in man.
It is a study on genes and the environment and has nothing to do with gender.
