Dr Yau Idris elected Chairperson, Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa, FNRBA

The Director-General of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, NNRA, Dr Yau Idris, has been elected Chairperson of the Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa, FNRBA.

The forum is an association of all nuclear regulatory bodies in Africa.

He served as Secretary and later Acting Chairperson of the forum before he was elected FNRBA Chairperson on 28 September, 2022.

Dr Idris is also the Chairman of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy, AFCONE.

He was elected AFCONE Chairperson at the 5th Conference of State Parties, CSP, to the African Nuclear Weapons Free Zone, otherwise known as the Pelindaba Treaty, in the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Pelindaba Treaty which was signed in1996 and came into being in 2009 has 41 African nations as parties.

AFCONE secretariat is in Pretoria, South Africa.

He will serve as Chairman, AFCONE, from 2022 to 2024.

Dr Yau Idris joined NNRA in 2004 as a pioneer member of staff.

He was the Team Lead in the licensing of the 300,000 Ci Gamma Irrigation Facility in Sheda, near Abuja, between 2005 to 2006.

He rose to become Director of Authorisation and Enforcement in NNRA.

Dr Idris served briefly under Governor Nasir El-Rufai as Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources in Kaduna State from August, 2015 to February, 2016.

He obtained a first degree in Physics from the University of Maiduguri in 1988; a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Ibadan in 1992 and Ph.D in Applied Nuclear Physics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1998.

Dr Yau Idris is a member, Nigerian Institute of Physics, Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists and Material Society of Nigeria among other bodies.
