2024 Nobel Prize Winners

The Nobel Prize winners for Medicine/Physiology were announced on 7 October, 2024.

They are Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkum for their work on MicroRNAs, how they bind to Messenger RNA and regulate proteins.

On 9 October, it was announced that the Nobel Prize in Physics was won by British-Canadian John Hopfield, 91, and American Geoffrey Hinton, 76, who are AI pioneers. They expressed surprise at being announced as winners.

Hopfield is Emeritus Professor in Princeton University and is known for advancing machine learning.

Hinton quit Google in 2023 so he could speak freely on the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence, and joined University of Toronto as a Professor.

The Nobel Prize for Chemistry went to David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper who are protein pioneers. Their work sheds light on how to use AI to analyze the structure of proteins.

Both Baker, 62, a Professor in University of Washington, Seattle, and Jumper, 39, are Americans.

Jumper and Hassabis, 48, Briton, work with Google DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google.
