The UN General Assembly declared 20 July as International Moon Day in its resolution 76/76 on “International cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space” in 2021.
Apollo 11’s lunar module, Eagle, landed on the Moon on 20 July, 1969.
“The Eagle has landed.”
Commander Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface followed by Buzz Aldrin on 21 July (while Michael Collins was in the command module, Columbia, circling above).
That marked the first and second human walking on the Moon.
“One small step for man; a giant leap for mankind,” said Neil Armstrong.
Since then, twelve persons, all of them male Americans, have set foot on the Moon.
The Artemis programme of NASA hopes to send the first person of colour and woman to the Moon this decade.
