A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has hit the Congo-Rwanda border, heightening fears of another volcanic eruption in Mount Nyiragongo.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake took place 10:03 WAT on 25 May, 2021 about 12 miles, northeast of Goma city.

Several buildings were shaken with many of them collapsing.

Several tremors and at least 200 aftershocks were reported after the volcanic eruption, renewing fears of another eruption.

Two cracks measuring hundreds of metres in length could be seen on the ground in Goma.

The government has ordered that Goma be evacuated.

Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo erupted 22 May, 2021 spewing lava and throwing the two million residents of the city of Goma into panic.

Goma is six miles (10 km) away.

At least 15 people were reported killed and another 32,000 fled into Rwanda.

UNESCO says it has re-united 530 children separated from their parents in the confusion.

The flowing lava destroyed 1,000 houses, including five schools.

The death toll by 25 May, 2021 rose to 32 as more people died from smoke and toxic gas inhalation from the cooling lava.

There were also deaths when the flowing lava hit some homes.

In addition, at least a dozen people died in car accidents while fleeing.

The UN says the lava flow stopped short of Goma and did not affect the international airport in the city as in the 2002 eruption.

Mount Nyiragongo erupted last on 17 January, 2002 killing 250 people.

There was an eruption earlier in 2016, but the one in 1977 was the deadliest – killing 600 people.

Before then, it has erupted about 34 times.

The first recorded volcanic incident in the 11,385 feet ( 3,470 m) mountain was in 1882.

The Goma Volcano Observatory could not warn of the latest eruption.

Funding for it was stopped by the World Bank in 2020 over allegations of corruption.
