The grain deal that allows Ukraine to export agricultural produce through the Black Sea has been extended for another 60 days till July 18, 2023.
It was renewed for the first time in November, 2022 and expired on March 18, 2023. Russia complained that its agricultural exports and fertilisers are being impeded and threatened to pull out of the deal.
The second extension was to cover the entire period of 120 days but Russia wanted only 60 days, till May 18, 2023 until its complaints are addressed.
Russia finally, agreed to this third extension of another 60 days, till 18 July, 2023 to give stakeholders more time to address its complaints.
The deal which was brokered in July, 2022 by the UN and Turkey allowed ships carrying Ukrainian grain to pass through the blockaded Black Sea for 120 days after the war started in February, 2022.
Under the deal, grain from Ukraine is being exported to 45 countries to feed 345 million people dependent on it for food security.
Russia pulled out of the deal in November, 2022 for the same reason but rejoined almost immediately when criticized for aggravating world hunger.
It is not clear if Russia will toughen its stance and refuse a further extension. This is moreso, because of the ICC declaring President Vladimir Putin wanted for war crimes in Ukraine on 17 March, 2023.
