South Africa to launch bid for 2,500 mw nuclear power plant for electricity generation

South Africa is inviting bids in March, 2024, for the construction of a 2,500 mw nuclear power plant for electricity generation.

The country has Africa’s only nuclear power station with two reactors in Koeberg, producing 1,900 mw of South Africa’s total capacity of 46,000 mw.

It started production in 1984 and the licence will expire in July, 2024.

Faced with acute electricity shortages, South Africa is extending its licence by 20 years.

The new 2,500 mw nuclear power plant will be operational in 2032/2033.

There is no doubt that South Africa’s nuclear power bid is entirely for peaceful purposes. It ended its military nuclear efforts under apartheid with President F. W. de Klerk in 1989 when it voluntarily, dismantled six completed nuclear bombs and one under construction.

The preferred bidder for its new 2,500 mw nuclear power station for electricity generation is expected to be named soon after, what it described as its transparent bid, is opened in March, 2024.
