China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Qui Jian Chun, says his country plans to site two nuclear power plants of 3,000 mw for electricity generation in Nigeria, with one of them in Kogi State.
The ambassador was speaking when he visited Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, in Lokoja, the state capital on 1 August, 2022.
He was accompanied by a delegation of China National Nuclear Corporation, CNNC.
To this end, China will establish a Department of Nuclear Energy in the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi State, to assist in capacity-building.
Nigeria’s Federal Government has been in talks with Russia’s Rosatom for the building of four one-thousand nuclear plants for electricity generation since 2008.
Nuclear electricity is an option in Nigeria because only about 59% of the population has full access to electricity.
